British actress Kate Elizabeth Winslet celebrates her 37th birthday today. The youngest person to have garnered six Oscar nominations, she won Best Actress for The Reader in 2008. Dennis Chua looks at her top 10 movies

1. Heavenly Creatures (1994)

THIS film directed by Peter Jackson is about the notorious 1954 Parker-Hulme murder case in Christchurch. Winslet marks her screen debut co-starring with Melanie Lynskey as two obsessive teenage girls, Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker, who kill Parker’s mother. It was well-received at the Venice Film Festival and received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

2. Sense And Sensibility (1995)

THIS British period drama film was directed by Taiwanese-American director Ang Lee and based on Jane Austen’s novel of the same name. Emma Thompson wrote the script and starred as Elinor Dashwood while Winslet played Elinor’s sister Marianne. The film also starred Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman as their respective suitors. It won three awards at the 1995 British Academy Film Awards.

3. Titanic (1997)

WINSLET is best remembered for this James Cameron movie which also starred Leonardo DiCaprio. In this fictionalised account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, Winslet played Rose DeWitt Bukater who survived the ship’s sinking. DiCaprio played her love interest, Jack Dawson

Nominated for 14 Oscars, it won 11, including Best Picture and Best Director, tying with Ben Hur (1959) for most Oscars won by a single film. It was re-released in 3D format in April this year.

4. Iris (2001)

WINSLET starred as British novelist Iris Murdoch in this biographical film which also focused on her relationship with John Bayley (Hugh Bonneville). It contrasts the beginning of their relationship when she was an outgoing person, and their later life, when she was suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.
Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent played the older versions of Murdoch and Bayley. Broadbent won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor while Winslet and Dench were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress respectively.

5. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)

THIS romantic science fiction film is about Clementine Kruczynski (Winslet) who has a relationship with the emotionally withdrawn Joel Barish (Jim Carrey). When their relationship falls apart, each opt to go through a procedure to have memories of the other erased. The film was directed by Michel Gondry. It won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay while Winslet was nominated for Best Actress.

6. Finding Neverland (2004)

THIS semi-biographical film is about playwright J.M. Barrie and his relationship with a family who inspired him to create Peter Pan. Directed by Marc Forster, it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture and Best Actor for Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Barrie. Winslet played Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, Barrie’s close friend.

7. The Holiday (2006)

THIS romantic comedy was written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers.
Winslet and Cameron Diaz played two lovelorn women from opposite sides of the Atlantic, who temporarily exchanged homes to escape heartbreak during the holiday season. It also starred Jude Law and Jack Black.

8. Flushed Away (2006)

THIS British-American computer animated adventure comedy film was directed by David Bowers and Sam Fell. Winslet voiced an enterprising rat named Rita who works the drains in her boat while Hugh Jackman voiced Roddy, a mouse who falls into the sewer. The two rodents team up to face the menacing Toad (Ian McKellen) and his rat henchmen Spike (Andy Serkis) and Whitey (Bill Nighy).

9. The Reader (2008)

THIS romantic drama is based on the 1995 German novel of the same name by Bernhard Schlink. Directed by Stephen Daldry, it tells the story of Michael Berg (Ralph Fiennes), a lawyer who as a teenager in 1958 had an affair with an older woman, Hanna Schmitz (Winslet) who resurfaces years later as one of the defendants in a war crimes trial.

Winslet won an Oscar for Best Actress for this film.

10. Revolutionary Road (2008)

THIS American-British film is based on the 1961 novel of the same name by Richard Yates. It was directed by Sam Mendes and marked DiCaprio and Winslet’s second collaboration after Titanic.

They play a couple, Frank and April Wheeler, who live in Revolutionary Road, Connecticut. To their friends the Wheelers are the perfect couple, but their relationship is troubled. Winslet earned a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for this film.
