So I got home last night after the shoot,” Kate Winslet is saying, sitting in a coffee shop in Chichester, south of London. Daffodils are abloom, and there’s morning mist in the air—as the Brits say at breakfast, it’s the “full English.” “I was so tired, I pulled off all my false eyelashes and left them on the edge of the couch. This morning Ned was like, ‘What is this?’ ”

That, in a cosmetic nutshell, is the two faces of Kate Winslet. She’s a movie star of two decades—complete with an Oscar, a LancĂ´me contract, a shiny new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame—but also a lady with a baby, a son, Bear, now five months old, and a new marriage, of a little over a year to one Ned Rocknroll, who she met literally in a blaze of passion (more on that later). The family—which includes Kate’s other children, Mia, 13, and Joe, 10—moved to the area late last year, sealing the deal on the homecoming for Winslet, who grew up in Reading, just a slip away.

And she’s a local here: The cafĂ© is the halfway point on her regular morning walk with a girlfriend, their new babies strapped to their chests. But Friday marks another campaign shoot for LancĂ´me (for which Winslet has been a face for seven years), and she has just returned from a hurtling trip to L.A., where she hit the red carpet for the premiere of her latest film, Divergent. “It’s a very strange place to be,” she muses of her double life, “because the truth is, I’m not famous until I am in those moments. Those are the times when I am suddenly famous. My real life is a very real life. And I know I say this all the time, but it’s really true. Thank God.”

Winslet is wearing something of a uniform for her, a black blazer and Rag & Bone jeans. (“They’re great because I’m not quite back into my pre-pregnancy jeans.”) She tells a story of getting her first manicure in months, stopping to add, “I know it sounds very self-effacing because people say, ‘Oh, you’re a film star. People probably come to your house to do it.’ But I don’t have the time to get my nails done apart from when I’m doing a photo shoot.”

It’s time to get back to the KW basics of take some serious risks.

Winslet is less self-effacing than utterly self-possessed. She always has been—from a 17-year-old in Heavenly Creatures, to plunging into the waters of 1997’s Titanic, to her Oscar for her role as a former Nazi camp guard in 2008’s The Reader. She has lived more lives than most 38-year-olds: married young to Jim Threapleton, who she met on the set of Hideous Kinky in 1997, then to director Sam Mendes, before the two split in 2010. On Rock’nRoll, you’ll get the crinkly eyes of a woman in love but little else. “Nobody knows him—it’s brilliant. They like to think they know him. They like to be judgmental because of his name and everything, but it’s fabulous because no one knows anything about him.”

What we do know—which takes us back to burning passion—is that the two met on the night of the infamous fire on Richard Branson’s Necker Island (Rock’nRoll is Branson’s nephew) three years ago. “We really could have died,” she recalls. “The house burned to the ground.” Winslet rescued Branson’s mother, Eve. “I carried her out of the house and down some very slippery stone steps. Lucky she’s tiny!” She gives a wry smile. “She’s my son’s great-grandmother now, so it’s such a strange thing to talk about.”

Winslet could never have known what an impact the experience would have: Ned, Bear… Chichester. “Don’t think I don’t say that!” she says with a laugh. “Every day, pretty much.” And Bear’s middle name? Blaze. “We had to get the fire thing in there somewhere.”

To further stretch the metaphor, Winslet once again has a fire in her belly. First, she’s turning 40 next year. “I’m quite excited about it, actually. I really enjoy getting older. You just don’t worry as much.” She’s also shooting the campaign for LancĂ´me’s new anti-ager, RĂ©nergie French Lift. “Working with them does a huge amount for my self-esteem, I’ve got to tell you.” Careerwise, it’s on. “It’s time to get back,” she says. “Back to the ‘I don’t fuck around,’ back to the KW basics of take some serious risks, put yourself out there. And just really push it.” This year will see her in Atlanta twice, shooting Insurgent, Divergent‘s sequel, and playing a villainous mobster wife in the heist thriller Triple Nine. Later she will travel to Australia to star in Jocelyn Moorhouse’s 1950s black comedy, The Dressmaker.

Because she does her homework, Winslet has an appointment later with a vintage sewing machine—which will likely mess up that manicure, and cause her no bother whatsoever.

Kate Winslet’s Favorite Things

What the Oscar winner can’t live without. Plus, read the cover story and see all the stunning fashion photos .

By Harper’s Bazaar Staff on May 20, 2014

Step into Kate Winslet‘s closet and you’ll never be far from a black Helmut Lang jacket. The actress relies on chic, easy pieces for a look that’s “pulled together and simple.” After her recent pregnancy with son Bear, now five months old, Winslet favors Rag & Bone jeans and AllSaints tees. And on her playlist? She defers to her older kids, Mia and Joe. “They have to tell me who we’re listening to these days, but I do love Iron and Wine,” she says. While being a mom keeps Winslet busy, she still finds time for glamour, whether it’s a bit of LancĂ´me RĂ©nergie French Lift face cream or four-inch Louboutins (“They make size 42’s!”). But she says she’s most inspired by ’50s femininity, “by far the most flattering, sexy tailoring in the last century.”
