Based on true events, Heavenly Creatures’ story of the friendship and burgeoning love between two teenage girls in 1950s New Zealand, and how it would lead to a shocking murder, found Jackson presenting a much more down to Earth story than is his norm – one that is engrossing and heartbreaking, as it heads towards its grim conclusion.

The “Fourth World” the girls imagine they can travel to still allows Jackson to include touches of the fantastic (and those sequences are terrific), but it’s the connection between the outwardly different yet oh-so connected Pauline and Juliet (Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet, making fantastic movie debuts) that resonates and stays with you long after that haunting final scream.
