Kate’s Occasional Chaos

KATE WINSLET may win plaudits for her red-carpet style, but she is not adverse to the odd fashion disaster. As her latest film, the Alan Rickman directed A Little Chaos, opens in cinemas this week, the Oscar-winning actress told us about a chaotic moment of her own.

“This has just happened in my life, on Saturday night,” she began, jumping up to act out the scenario she was about to impart. “I was at a sixtieth birthday party, feeling great, wearing a dress that could be unzipped from the bottom or the top. So my husband, Ned, puts me into the dress at home no problem, but when everyone started to move into be seated for dinner I needed a wee, so I said to Ned, ‘Go on I’ll see you in there’. I unzipped it from the bottom, sat down, had a wee – no problem – stood up, zipped it back up…” a pause for effect, “And the zip came off in my hand.” Winslet freezes. “So I was stood there, knowing that everyone is pretty far away and I can’t fucking move. The dress opens all the way – the whole fucking thing! I’m standing there in my knickers and my Roger Vivier heels, basically wearing a black cape! All I could do was stand there, look at myself in the mirror and crack up laughing. It made me think I am never, ever getting on the red carpet in a dress with a zip.”

Watching Winslet perform on the hoof in this way is utterly enthralling – and immediately compounds her reputation as being one of the most down-to-earth actors around (she was rescued from remaining in the toilet all night by sticking her head out of the door and hissing over a friend who quickly fetched a replacement dress). She is also just as beautiful in real life – dressed in skin-tight trousers and a tight leather jacket with minimal make-up – as she is on screen as her character Sabine De Barra in Wakeman’s film. De Barra is an aspiring landscape gardener, grieving for the loss of her husband and daughter, who is commissioned to design King Louis XIV’s palace at Versailles and ends up falling in love with her fellow green-fingered horticulturalist André Le Notre, played by Matthias Schoenaerts.

Mattias is hot as hell, I’ve got great tits! – Kate Winslet

It’s often assumed that British actors read Shakespeare and sonnets as we’re going to bed at night

“I definitely felt that there were similarities between myself and Sabine,” Winslet explained. “She’s overcome a lot of grief in her life and certain degrees of extreme hardship and I’ve had a bumpy ride in my personal life as well. I admire the fact that she could do that. She didn’t carry the grief with her or expect the world to pity her. She just picked herself up and carried on because she had to in order to survive. She’s very positive and joyful and we don’t often see characters like that – especially in period films.”

Winslet is well-versed in period dramas – Sense and Sensibility, Titanic and Quills to name a few of the most famous – enjoying the freedom that comes with interpretation. But don’t expect to see her in anything Shakespeare related soon.

With Alan Rickman in the final scene

“It’s often assumed that British actors read Shakespeare and sonnets as we’re going to bed at night and we’re all very familiar with it,” she said. “I’m actually not. I starred in the film version of Hamlet and Shakespeare is extraordinary, but I myself haven’t been particularly drawn to it, because it is daunting. Period films don’t need to be like that and A Little Chaos isn’t. It feels fresh, at times funny, plus Matthias is hot as hell, I’ve got great tits in it – it’s a lovely fresh, modern-feeling film.”

Fresh and funny is Winslet in a nutshell, and despite occasional chaos, she possesses an ever-present calm confidence – something that she called upon during the aforementioned zip-unravelling-black-cape incident.

“In my twenties or early thirties if something like that was to happen I probably would have burst into tears, had palpitations, broken out in a rash,” she revealed. “But I didn’t give a shit! I thought it was just so, so funny.”

A Little Chaos opens in cinemas on Friday April 13.

Kate Winslet says it was ‘hilarious’ trying to squeeze boobs into a corset while pregnant

KATE WINSLET may look amazing in her latest film, A Little Chaos, but the actress admits it wasn’t easy playing the part of Sabine De Barra while pregnant.

By BECCA LONGMIRE
PUBLISHED: 14:33, Wed, Apr 15, 2015 | UPDATED: 15:04, Wed, Apr 15, 2015

The actress was pregnant with her son Bear, now 16 months old, when the movie was being filmed and she admitted that it was ridiculously hard to squeeze her growing boobs into a corset for the movie.

The 39-year-old laughed: “All I can say is being pregnant and wearing a corset is hilarious – because there’s nothing you can do about the boobs.

“There they are! And they just keep getting bigger, and you keep trying to squash them into… just into another place, because they don’t even go down any more, you just try and find space under your armpits, anywhere.

“It really is hilarious,” she added, according to PA.

“And the costumes have to keep being expanded. And I often had to just take things, literally, from extras because my own clothes wouldn’t fit me any more,” the Titanic superstar then said.

“I’d say ‘That apron, do you mind? I’m actually going to take that to be part of my costume today!’. It was really very funny.”

Despite still being one of the most famous faces in Hollywood, Kate also admitted that she no longer enjoys it when all eyes are on her.

“I don’t really feel like that any more,” she said while promoting her latest film.

“I think it’s sort of quietened down a lot now,” the British beauty continued.

“I’m older now, my life is what it is, that’s not as interesting to people as the kind of more tabloid, juicy stuff of one’s twenties and so I don’t necessarily feel watched.

“But also, I think as you get older, you learn to just really not care. It’s funny, it’s one of the great things about approaching 40, which I am later this year, goodness me! And when you’ve gone through childbirth as well, you really do learn to just exist within yourself, and not care what people say.”

A Little Chaos opens in cinemas on Friday (April 17).

I’ve wanted my own Golden Hat for a few years and am working on creating one of my own. The original fedora hat that Kate Winslet sent around to some of today’s most loved entertainers is designed by Albertus Swanepoel. It is very dark gray, I believe it is rabbit fur, and has a double-layer wishbone charm on the side. It appears to be similar to the Duchamp hat, which he created for his Spring 2010 collection, which is around the same time that Kate began work on the book & hat-share, according emails in her book.

Recently, I was able to buy an Albertus Swanepoel wool hat & some accessories. They will not be perfect copies, but a very close match.

Once it’s ready, I’ll share a photo or two. Very excited!

“Why a wishbone charm? Kate Winslet’s traveling hat, which graced the noggins of 100 of the world’s most famous celebrities, couldn’t have accomplished such a generous feat without a little fairy dust—so that’s exactly what it got. Kate explains, “I put the wishbone charm onto (the hat) since I wanted to find something that gave the hat its own good luck memento. It had a lot of traveling to do, and I wanted to wish it luck along the way and give the project, as a whole, an extra touch of luck and magic.” – Source: http://shop.goldenhatfoundation.org/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=GHFXMH000100

Winslet overcomes her Rickmania

Press Association – Mon, Apr 13, 2015

Kate Winslet has confessed she would not have been able to star in her latest film had she not managed to overcome her fear of Alan Rickman.

The Oscar-winning actress attended the premiere of A Little Chaos at the Kensington Odeon in London tonight, with co-stars Helen McCrory and Alan Rickman, who also directed the period drama.

Winslet last worked with Rickman when she was 19 on her second feature film Sense And Sensibility. Her character Marianne married Rickman’s Colonel Brandon.

She said of being directed by him in A Little Chaos: “It was wonderful to be part of something that was a collaboration with a friend and someone who I’ve known for such a long time. Who I can’t believe, really, I managed to ever get over my fear of.

“When I first met Alan I was absolutely terrified. I was 19, he was Alan Rickman, and he’s got that voice, and I remember meeting him in the hair and make-up trailer and thinking, ‘I’m going to die. He thinks I’m rubbish. Why am I here?’.

“And here I am 20 years later having ended up marrying him in Sense And Sensibility and now being directed by him in A Little Chaos.”

Winslet plays Sabine De Barra, a fictional landscape gardener who overcomes the odds to design an ornate rockery in the elaborate gardens of Versailles for King Louis XIV (Rickman).

Winslet, 39, was pregnant with her third child at the time of filming, but still took part in a perilous stunt scene when her character falls into a weir.

She revealed: “Flinging myself into that water, I was pregnant and I deliberately didn’t tell anybody, because I knew they wouldn’t let me fall in if they knew. Of course I had to do that bit, so I did, and I had a great time.

“It was (freezing), but I’ve done Titanic, so it was a bit like taking a cold bath in comparison.”

Rickman admitted recreating the Palace of Versailles on location in England on a shoestring budget had been a challenge.

He said: “The problem is England is a thin country, and you’re only ever about 20 miles from a motorway. Or the wind changes and you’re on a flight path. So we have many interesting out-takes.”

Asked if there was enough funding for the arts in Britain, Rickman replied: “Give me a break! I’ll come back and answer that question after the election.”

He then added: “Vote Labour!”

A Little Chaos, which also stars Helen McCrory and Matthias Schoenaerts, opens in cinemas on Friday April 17.

Kate Winslet has confessions to make as she smoulders in a VERY daring dress at A Little Chaos premiere

\

SNAP.PA – Confession one: she was once terrified of Alan Rickman. And two: she took part in a dangerous water stunt, despite being pregnant.

Kate Winslet may have caused her own little chaos at Kensington Odeon tonight as fans rushed to get a glimpse of the actress who was dressed in a midnight blue body-hugging number with a dangerously plunging neckline.

The Oscar-winning actress attended the premiere of A Little Chaos looking every inch the Hollywood superstar in her sophisticated Stella McCartney dress that featured a huge bow detail.

The 39-year-old added gold earrings and bracelets and a pair of killer black-and-gold stilettos to complete her svelte look.

We can’t imagine one of Hollywood’s greatest stars being anything but confident, yet Kate had a startling confession to make.

She admitted she would not have been able to star in her latest film had she not managed to overcome her fear of the director – Alan Rickman.

Kate last worked with Alan when she was 19 on her second feature film Sense and Sensibilty. Her character Marianne married Rickman’s Colonel Brandon.

“It was wonderful to be part of something that was a collaboration with a friend and someone who I’ve known for such a long time,” she said of being directed by Alan in A Little Chaos. “Who I can’t believe, really, I managed to ever get over my fear of.

“When I first met Alan I was absolutely terrified.

“I was 19, he was Alan Rickman, and he’s got that voice, and I remember meeting him in the hair and make-up trailer and thinking, ‘I’m going to die. He thinks I’m rubbish. Why am I here?’.

“And here I am 20 years later having ended up marrying him in Sense and Sensibility and now being directed by him in A Little Chaos.”

Kate Winslet: ‘I loved playing an English rose again’

Kate Winslet, the star of Alan Rickman’s period drama about a love triangle in the gardens of Versailles, was in full bloom at the London premiere of A Little Chaos

‘It’s a very modern love story’: Kate Winslet at the premiere of A Little Chaos Photo: Rex

“Look at her. Look at what’s happened to her,” Alan Rickman implored, on the red carpet of his latest directorial effort, A Little Chaos.

“She’s been married, she’s got her children, she’s still got the best sense of humour, she’s still got an amazing work ethic, she’s got the balance right.”

The actor, who also stars in the film as Louis XIV and helped write the screenplay, was talking about Kate Winslet. It’s been 20 years since they worked on together – in Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility – but the five-time Oscar nominated actress was still his first choice to play Sabine De Barra, the fictional gardener who in Rickman’s film brings innovation to Versailles’ gardens and drama to its courts.

Fittingly, there were enormous bouquets topping out of topiaries vases outside the Odeon cinema in Kensington, West London, for the film’s UK premiere. It was a fine spring evening, one of the first of the year, and Helen McCrory, who plays the manipulative (and real) Madame Le Nôtre, was pleased to be able to dress up for the event, explaining that “My sunglasses are Polaroid, so I can even watch the film in them!”

The British actress, who arrived at the premiere in a shimmering, floor-length gown with her husband Damian Lewis, shrugged off recent criticism that asking a woman about her red carpet outfit was sexist.

“If you don’t ask me about what I’m wearing on the red carpet I take a slight affront!” she said. “Part of the fun of it is dressing up and choosing something that people will say, ‘what a beautiful dress’. I enjoy wearing it – you wouldn’t take any interest in what I wore to the pub.”

McCrory worked with Rickman during the Harry Potter film franchise, in which she played Narcissa Malfoy, mother to Harry’s schoolboy nemesis, Draco. However, she explained, Rickman is also a “friend”, and working with him as a director was “fantastic”.

As Le Notre, McCrory finds herself in a love triangle between her husband André (the Belgian actor Matthias Shoenaertes) and Sabine, who are brought together through their work.

“It’s a very honest love story,” Winslet explained on the red carpet. “It’s set against a beautiful landscape, but it is a love story – although rather an unlucky one, which always really floats my boat.” Plus, she added, “It was lovely for me to play an English person. I haven’t played an English person for quite a while.” While Sabine, Winslet’s character, is French, the courtiers adopt English accents in the film.

Don’t be fooled, though, warns Rickman – A Little Chaos is also “a very modern story.”

“It’s important for me to explore the idea of a woman at the end of the film saying, ‘What about us?’ and the man saying, ‘we’ll shape each other’”, he added, “that’s interesting to me.”

As a woman of independent means within the rigidity of 18th century Versailles society, Sabine was a controversial figure. But, as McCrory points out, the film explores the other constraints that court life brought: “When you first look at a woman like Madame Le Nôtre, who is very Machiavellian, it is very easy to have no sympathy for her.”

“But then you realise that unless these women positioned themselves within the court and became favourites they were not supported, they were just cast out. They were just keeping themselves alive.”

It’s into this feverish hierarchy that Sabine brings A Little Chaos – the unstructured, relaxed attitude to gardening, and perhaps life, that was at odds with the pillars of Versailles. Who better to bring it than Winslet, the ultimate English rose?

A Little Chaos is released on April 17

Kate Winslet’s battle to build sea wall at Witterings home

11:29Tuesday 14 April 2015

Kate Winslet’s plan to build a sea wall has been refuted by environment agencies.

OSCAR-WINNING actress Kate Winslet is facing a battle over plans to build a sea wall to protect her home at the Witterings.

Natural England and the Chichester Harbour Conservancy have advised that Chichester District Council refuse a planning application for a 170m (557ft-long sea wall above the mean high tide line..

The application was made by Miss Winslet, whose neighbours include Rolling Stone Keith Richards.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy has told the council its policy states it will require larger-scale schemes to fully address landscape and nature conservation impacts and provide appropriate compensation habitat.

It said it remained ‘unconvinced of the need for this sea defence and that its impacts on the landscape and nature conservation interested of the AONB would be acceptable’.

“The application does not appear to have considered alternative options such as setting the footpath further back thereby avoiding the need for a hard defence on this stretch of currently undefended, natural shoreline.

“There is also a lack of information or consideration of the likely impacts on the natural beauty of the AONB, where a hard engineered defence such as this will clearly have a significant visual impact.”

Natural England objected and said the proposal will result in a loss of the Special Areas of Conservation, Special Protection Area and Ramsar Habitat.

The planning document states: “The proposed privately funded sea defences will ensure that the existing vegetation and public footpath will be protected into the future.

“Furthermore it should be considered that the footpath is liable to become dangerous in areas without protection from further erosion of the existing banks.”

The agent has said everything possible would be done to avoid disturbing rare seabirds.

More time has been set aside for the application to be explored further. No date has been set for a decision.

Miss Winslet previously owned a £2 million home in Treyford, near Harting but sold it in 2014 following another planning spat with locals after she proposed to install gates at the entrance.
