Kate Winslet doesn’t fear aging: ‘I honestly want to go rocketing to 40’
Ree Hines

While it’s hard to believe that almost two decades have passed since Kate Winslet won our hearts (and broke them) alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in “Titanic,” the actress isn’t worried about how time flies.

Winslet will turn 40 this fall, and as she revealed in an interview on TODAY Thursday, she’s looking forward to the landmark age.

“I honestly want to go rocketing to 40,” she said. “You know, I want to climb a mountain on my 40th birthday. I’m going to have a festival of parties. I just want to do a lot of different things.”

And she has no doubt that she’s up for that mountain and more.

“I do feel really great,” she said. “I feel, you know, naturally very strong. I truly feel physically probably stronger than I ever have been, and fitter, and healthier and all those great things. … Growing older, for me at least, is really empowering and not in any way daunting.”

She’s certainly not letting the years keep her from returning to the sort of films that kicked off her career — period pieces. In fact, her next big-screen appearance will see her decked out in 17th century finery and acting alongside her 1995 “Sense and Sensibility” co-star, Alan Rickman, again.

In “A Little Chaos,” she plays a landscape artist commissioned to work in the gardens of Versailles, and she’s taken a lesson home from the film.

“The thing is [‘Chaos’] really did, truly did, inspire me,” Winslet said of her newfound green thumb. “I certainly did go home, and rather than having my little pots of herbs in the kitchen, I decided I really would plant them — so they would flourish — and I would cook with them every day. So that’s kind of a bit a nice little touch.”

Gardening, mountain climbing — what’s next? Only time will tell.

CS Video: Alan Rickman and Kate Winslet on Reuniting for A Little Chaos

A LITTLE CHAOS ALAN RICKMAN KATE WINSLET
BY EDWARD DOUGLAS ON JUNE 24, 2015

or nearly thirty years, Alan Rickman has established himself as a respected actor, whether it’s from playing a role like Hans Gruber in the original Die Hard or as Severus Snape in the “Harry Potter” films. One thing he might not be as well known for is his directing.

Having directed 1997’s The Winter Guest and lots of theater productions since then, Rickman has returned to being the man behind the camera for A Little Chaos, a fictionalized look at the design and construction of Louis XIV’s greatest masterpiece, the gardens at the Palace of Versailles, during the 17th Century.

While Rickman himself takes on the role of the French monarch, it’s Oscar winner Kate Winslet who is the focus of the story, playing Sabine De Barra, a landscape designer and gardener commissioned by Versailles’ principal architect André Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts from Rust and Bone) to design and construct the Rockwork Grove, an outdoor theater and water fountain that would be hidden within the gardens. While Sabine struggles with getting the workers to do her bidding, gossip starts going around court about her relationship with the married André, forcing her to prove herself even more than she might have to as a woman doing predominantly a man’s job.

The last time Rickman and Winslet worked together, it was appearing in Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning Sense and Sensibility twenty years ago, for which Winslet received her first of six Oscar nominations even before exploding with the mega-blockbuster Titanic. Being able to reunite for A Little Chaos allowed them to explore a different dynamic with some of the best scenes in the movie being the quieter and more intimate moments between King Louis and Sabine.

In the video interview below, you can hear Rickman and Winslet talk about reuniting after nearly 20 years, Winslet talking about their other co-star Matthias Schoenaerts, and Rickman talking about what it took to recreate the gardens of Versailles and the Rockwork Grove on a fairly modest budget.

A Little Chaos opens in select cities and On Demand on Friday, June 26.

Kate Winslet: I get along great with my exes
PUBLISHED

Kate Winslet says she and her ex-husbands “all get along great” and work together well raising their children.

The 39-year-old actress is mother to 14-year-old daughter Mia with first husband Jim Threapleton, 11-year-old Joe with second husband Sam Mendes and 18-month-old Bear with spouse Ned Rocknroll.

And despite the somewhat unconventional situation of having three children from three marriages, Kate insists that they make it work.

“There’s a lot of working together with their dads,” she told USA Today. “We really all get along great. You just do your best,” she says. “The kids are honestly fantastic, normal, sweet kids. That’s one thing people say about my children, which I’m incredibly proud of: They’re so kind and so normal.”

Kate feels like she has finally found happiness in her personal life with husband Ned. And as she approaches her 40th birthday in October, she says the milestone has made her want to appreciate everything about her life.

“Working in film is like having a baby,” she said. “There’s never the right time. It’s always a crazy juggle. The reason, largely, is actually approaching 40 and wanting to feel creatively alive.

“I want to go rocketing to 40 and feeling really good about the things I’ve done. I’ve had some wonderful opportunities that are impossible to turn down.”

Kate was most recently seen in A Little Chaos opposite Alan Rickman. But the role she is perhaps most excited about is her part in Steve Jobs. In order to land the role of Apple executive Joanna Hoffman, Kate emailed a picture of herself in a brunette wig to producer Scott Rudin.

“What did I have to lose? I felt lucky to be in a position where I had Scott Rudin’s e-mail in my address book and I could use that contact,” she said. “I love unconventional ways of doing things. I’ve never had an ego.”
